Fr Gilbert's Father Expires

Lorna Show

26 Nov. It was a sea of humanity crowded at St Aloysius College Grounds. A rare crowd to behod. "Lorna Show" was the cynosure. Lorna from Goa came all the way to Mangalore, singing. The last time she came to Milagres hall, people went back disappointed for lack of seats. This time, they were not disappointed. Lilting music, rythmic songs and some good fun... defined the evening. We cannot forget the fancy fete, of course. Lots of life at SAC Primary school. The fete was organised in aid of Kannada medium school, to assist the poorer children. It was quite a success. New Student Editors for the Blogs

24 Nov. I have been uploading the blogs of the department and my own, for over a year, now, sometimes uploading 3-4 times a day. That has made a lot of difference to many people around - my students, former students, friends and benefactors. I have learnt much in the bargain.

Now it is time to hand over the reign of the blogs to my students. Abrar and Arron have come forward to shoulder this responsibility of uploading the blogs (both the blogspot blogs). It is a massive task, demands much dedication, time and energy. But given their dedication, they would surely do a good job, under the able guidance of Ms Suman. I congratulate them and wish them well.

Hello, It's Holiday Time

21 Nov. Hello there! It's holiday time almost everywhere. Almost all undergraduates are in vacation, after completing their semester exams. Many Post Graduates have revision holidays in preparation for the semester exams, which commence on 4 December. Some of those who could not make it last time, are writing their supplementary exams this week. In the meantime, the College is full of activities. Lots of things happening in the Campus (visit our www.sacjournalism.blogspot.com) Some students are seen in the campus. Almost all the A-V activity has been brought to rest for a brief while, now. Nevertheless, a few things cannot be halted. I am very much at home. Keep myself occupied with a few academic and department related things. That's my vacation, for now. Keep in touch. Advertising: Those tall stories, ethics & you

CONSUMER CORNER By Sakuntala Narasimhan Twenty years have passed since the Advertising Standards Council of India was established towards the end of 1985, to set guidelines to ensure fairness, truth and ethical norms in ads. Subsequently a complaints committee was also constituted to receive and look into complaints from the public regarding ads in the media (print, television, hoardings, radio) that violate norms of decency, fairness and truth. Over the years, members of the complaints committee have examined a variety of ads and issued orders to discontinue those considered indecent (portraying women in a derogatory or demeaning manner) or misleading (making exaggerated claims about a product). Activists’ groups like the Consumer Guidance Society of India (Mumbai) have been vigilant against unethical and misleading ads, while groups like the Consumer Education and Research Centre (CERC) of Ahmedabad have demanded “corrective advertisements” (saying the earlier ads were misleading and apologising for making exaggerated claims) in all the media where the earlier (misleading) ads were published. This was a reasonable demand, considering that buyers take their cues from what the ads say, and need to get the correct picture too if the ads were misleading. One ad that the ASCI examined and disapproved of in 2004 was that for Oxyrich bottled water, which claimed to contain 300 per cent more oxygen and was, therefore, “good for you”. CERC argued that oxygen in the stomach (which is where the water goes) makes no difference, it is oxygen in lungs that matters, and the claim of ‘300 %’ was not proved. The ad was ordered withdrawn. Travelling around the country, I still find ads for Oxyrich painted in large letters by the roadside and beside railway tracks. People still see it and will be influenced by the brand name and its false claims. The ASCI has neither the authority nor the facilities to keep monitoring ads nationwide, unless we the public are aware of the violation of the ASCI order and bring it to the notice of the complaints committee. Another ad that was banned as ‘misleading’ was for a slimming gadget claiming to help in slimming without diet control or brisk exercise (“just place your foot on the gadget, and the battery vibrations will help break down your fat” – a claim that could not be substantiated). The ad continues to appear in print, despite the ASCI ruling prohibiting it. Ads for ‘fairness creams’ are perhaps the best example of how advertisers manage to slip past the guidelines for fairness (pun unintended) and truth. The ads telecast prominently in the middle of popular programmes (live telecasts of cricket matches) reinforced the belief that dark-skinned girls were somehow ‘unattractive’ or inferior, and that using a skin lightening cream would bring her hordes of suitors seeking her hand. This was blatant discrimination on the basis of skin colour, and rightly women’s groups like the All-India Democratic Women’s Alliance, sent letters to the information and broadcasting ministry protesting against the offensive ads. The ads were banned. The truth is that externally nothing can change the colour of the skin which is determined by genes. In fact attempts to meddle with skin colour (melanin) can result in incurable malignant erosions and cancers (I have seen documentary films showing victims with cheeks eaten up by toxic chemicals in the creams). Now, the ads have shifted their focus to avoid the wrath of women – by featuring a male who does not get girl friends because of his dark skin, and becomes popular after using the ‘fairness’ cream (‘The first fairness cream for men’). Whatever the focus, the manufacturer rakes in the profits, despite the ASCI’s rulings. “Proven results – dark spots disappear,” said an ad which claimed to have met “dermatological tests”, but ASCI found the claim unsubstantiated and the ad had to be withdrawn. The ASCI can only initiate action provided someone sends in a complaint. Which means our role as users/buyers, becomes important. The CERC recently suggested that we need a regulatory commission, since the ASCI has no powers to award compensation to consumers for loss or injury caused by false ads. There is a law against “magic remedies” ads offering cures for problems that have no known cures – baldness, for instance, is a genetic characteristic and cannot be ‘‘cured’’ (it may be only arrested, not reversed). Yet a popular homoepath has claimed (with pictures) re-growth of hair on bald patches. After CERC’s complaint to ASCI, the “super speciality homeopath” has agreed to stop such ads. (CERC’s magazine ‘Insight’, devotes its back cover to exposing such tall claims, in every issue.) If an ad seems offensive/unacceptable or too good to be true , send a postcard giving details (clippings, if possible) to the ASCI (Air-Conditioned Market, Tardeo, Mumbai 400034). If most of us took the trouble, there would be fewer citizens being taken for a ride by unscrupulous sellers.

‘Evaluated answer scripts are not confidential documents’

Now copies of evaluated answer scripts of examinations conducted by the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) will be available to the public, under the Right to Information Act. Not only that, the KPSC in future, will have to make public the ‘key’ or ‘model’ answers after the entire process of selection to a particular category of post was over, besides disclosing information on the manner and method of evaluation in advance to the candidates appearing for the exams. The Karnataka Information Commission passed an order in this regard on Wednesday, in which it ruled that the KPSC cannot claim evaluated answer scripts as confidential documents, indicating a fiduciary relationship of trust between itself and the examiners. The Commission passed the order on a complaint filed by Mr E Ramamurthy, who had appeared for the Gazetted Probationers’ Examination-1998 and was denied copies of some of his answer scripts by the KPSC. State Chief Information Commissioner K K Misra and Information Commissioner K A Thippeswamy, in their order, also disagreed with the finding of the Central Information Commission that: “While seeking a copy of evaluated answer papers, either his/her own or others, a citizen would be demanding a purely personal information which has no personal relationship to any public interest or activity.” On the contrary, the State Commission held that providing answer scripts would not serve any personal purpose because the applicant’s right to get a revaluation is not covered under the RTI Act. ‘Impartial, objective’ The Commission held that providing of answer scripts would ensure impartiality, objectivity and fairness of evaluation by examiners appointed by the Public Service Commissions, whose purpose incidentally is of utmost concern to the people. Noticing the outcome of some inquiry and court proceedings in which some examiners were found to have favoured certain candidates, the Commission said, opening of evaluation process, including making evaluated answer scripts available to anybody, is very much necessary as a confidence building measure and reviving the faith of people in the KPSC. “The examiners who are entrusted with the task of evaluation would be more careful and objective in their assessment once the answer scripts were made available and it would also act as an indirect pressure on the examiners to be fair and impartial,” the Commission opined. While making it clear that providing copies of answer scripts under the RTI Act does not mean that the candidates are entitled to revaluation, the Commission said the process of re-totalling and revaluation would be governed by the rules and regulations of the KPSC. The semester students have examinations and staff invigilations. That means, fewer activities in the Campus. Besides, I have been in and out of the Campus (town). Since we don't want our friends and well wishers to lose on SAC news, we are back to this good-old blog. From now on, till we get a better option, we hope to update you on whatever is happening on our campus, at the earliest possible. For now, Semester exams have begun on 2 November. They will go on till late November, followed by valuation. Hence, the Degree campus is enveloped in exams mood, specially the semester scheme students. The non semester, II & III Yr students -many of them- have left Mangalore; those IN, don't want to miss the campus buzz. In fact, the other day, when one of the lecturers came to the Campus on a Monday when NOBODY was to be there, he was surprised to find hundreds of students in the campus. Fr Eugene Lobo, Principal of SAC, met with an accident last evening. He was returning from his home after visiting his mother. It must have been around 7.00 pm. Two dogs seemingly came on the way. He successfully avoided one. Then came the next from the opposite side, and Fr Eugene fell to the ground from his scooter.

He has sustained two minor fractures on his right hand. He was operated upon at Fr Muller Hospital this morning. Now he is back to the ward, where he is resting. He says he feels fine.

Will be back for a brief while on Sunday and disappear on Monday. This time, I will around Mangalore, but not at SAC. I wish you all the best. Do well in your examinations. Please remember to study well, relate your study to the conteporary media scenario, and pay attention to details which you may think to be insignificant. You as students, nothing is unimportant; if it were unimportant, it would not be in the syllabus or be taught. Purpose of education is not just completing the "portion" and getting 'pass marks', rather challenging students to grow in allround development. Wider reading, developing critical abilities, and crisp articulation is part and parcel of this. Good wishes. Don't worry about question papers. My only intention is that you should come out through flying colours. Ultimately, you will !

The Process :

Pranayam: Pranayam means measured and controlled breathing. It has four stages. Breathe in (Purak), Hold your breath in ( kumbhak), exhale ( rechak), and again hold your breath out ( kumbhak). The actual proportion of breathing is: 1:4:2:1. But the simpler proportion is: 1:2:2:1. That is to say, if you take 3 counts to inhale, you must hold your breath for 6 counts, then exhale for 6 counts and remain without breathing in for 3 counts. If you are doing the pranayam before your prayer you need not count, but follow all the four steps. The fourth step is essential for our prayer. 2. An Act of Faith: I am in God and God in me.( Taken from the Cloud of Unknowing.). After sufficient practice one can only be aware that I am in God. This is the reality of life. After the Act of Faith be aware of the following realities of life: Awe and wonder of my life, of my bodily being. Secondly, Be aware of a feeling of gratitude to all the elements that sustain me: air, heat( the Sun), space, earth, and water.

3. VIPASSANA: Becoming aware of all aches, pains, sensations of the body.

. Observe them naturally, neutrally.

Do not react to them.

. Do not create craving or aversion for them.

. Be aware of the known sensations in the body; yet be aware of the unknown causes of these sensations, aches and pains.

. Just accept what is happening Do not ask questions, as to why and due to what.

. These are negatives being released from our depth. I AM A PROBLEM AND I AM A SOLUTION.

4. CENTRING: now we move on from the known to the unknown, from awareness to the depth awareness.

.Just be still. By stilling our bodies we still our minds.

. No thoughts, no images, no fantasies, no reflections, no concepts; do not pray in any way, not even adoration, or be aware of consolations. STAY COMFORTABLE WITH THE GOD OF ALL CONSOLATIONS.

5. FORMULAE OF INSPIRATION:

Now be aware of the physical experiences of pain, pleasures, heat, and coolness.

Al Madhyam Looks at Future & Gender Equity

Seminar on Gender Equality

Anubhav, the Women’s Forum of St Aloysius College, Mangalore, organised a one-day seminar on Gender Equity, on 7 September 2006. The topic is a mandatory study subject for the students under credit based semester system (2006-07 onwards).

The seminar is a part of the learning on gender equity in society. The learning is awarded 20 marks in the internal assessment system. Today’s session comprised of two sessions, viz. Gender, Sex and Gender Stereotypes’ and ‘Discrimination Against Women’.

Gender, Sex and Gender Stereotypes: Dr Rita Noronha, of the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, interacted with the students, in making the session informative and interesting.

Dr Noronha opined that 18-20 years of learning in our schools and colleges cannot be unlearned easily. She explained the basic concepts of gender and sex. While making the students express their opinion about the topic at hand, she made it clear that individual has to be respected for what s/he is irrespective of one’s gender.

Matriarchal and patriarchal families were present in the history of our country, depending on the time of culture. She made reference to some families and emphasised that not only women have experienced inequality, but men also have.

Stereotypes are irrational attribute attached to anyone. Hence gender stereotypes are irrational attributions to the gender – be they male or female. For instance, boldness and courage are features of men while patience and emotionality are associated with women. Women need not be treated as ‘goddess’, in stead, they be treated as normal human beings, said Dr Noronha.

Women do not want to be superior. When someone wants to superior and put the other person down, problem arise. Hence, equality is the right attitude, she said.

Discrimination Against Women: Violence has always been there in society, but media has made a difference by reporting it, said Dr Jacinta D’Souza, Principal of Roshni Nilaya, talking on ‘Discrimination Against Women’. Discrimination against women takes multiforms viz. female foeticide, female infanticide, prostitutions, female trafficking, etc.

Women in our society have been victims of ill-treatment, humiliation, torture, and exploitation. Now, violence is moving to public spheres from just a private issue. Dr D’Souza cited many examples of gory violence. Certain countries enforce their hegemony due to the globalisation phenomenon, which in turn, affects women. Globalisation has given freedom. However, future is bleak; globalisation has led to break-down of families. Fast life, junk food, status, and money have degraded society. This has had a negative influence on women, and their life.

Changing the parental attitude towards female children, and strengthening women’s organisations will help in decreasing violence and discrimination against women.

I could not remove or move the cam's xd card in the 6-in-1 card slot! And now, i can niether use the card in the laptop, nor in remove it from there, to use it in the camera! What a ME!!! Sad!

NRS 2006 – Key Findings

Mumbai,August 29 2006: The National Readership Studies Council (NRSC) released the findings of National Readership Study 2006 (NRS 2006), to an audience comprising the who’s who of the media, advertising and marketing fraternity. Press and television correspondents were also invited to share the findings of the study.

The National Readership Study 2006 (NRS 2006) in India is the largest survey of its kind in the world, with a sample size of 2,84,373 house-to-house interviews to measure the media exposure and consumer product penetration in both urban and rural India – and of course the estimated readership of publications. The study covers 535 publications of which 230 are dailies and 305 are magazines.

Highlights from NRS 2006

The reach of the press medium (dailies and magazines combined) has increased from 216 million to 222 million over the last one year.

As a proportion however, press reach has stabilized in urban India – at 45%. Press reach in rural India has also stayed the same at 19% -- needless to say, on a much larger population base. The number of readers in rural India (110 million) is now roughly equal to that in urban India (112 million).

Dailies have driven this growth in the press medium, their reach rising as a proportion of all individuals aged 12 years and above – which is the universe defined for NRS – from 24% to 25%. Magazines have declined in reach from 9% to 8% over the last one year.

The time spent reading has remained the same – at 39 minutes daily on an average per day over the last year. But there has been increase in urban India (from 41 to 44 minutes daily) and decrease in rural India (from 36 to 35 minutes daily).

Literacy as measured in the NRS has risen from 69.9% to 71.1% over the last year. The rate of growth has been marginally lower urban areas (84.4% to 85.3%) than in rural areas (63.6% to 64.8%). One would expect this to boost the market for the press medium.

Satellite TV has grown considerably in reach – from 207 million individuals watching in an average week in 2005 to as many as 230 million individuals in 2006 – further expanding its lead over the number of readers.

Radio is one medium that has shown considerable resurgence. Its reach has increased from 23% to 27% of the population listening to any station in the average week. Almost equaling the number of readers.

Radio FM has driven this explosion in reach – from 76 million individuals listening in an average week in 2005 to as many as 119 million individuals in 2006 – a 55% increase over last year.

Cinema has, on the surface, declined sharply from 51 million individuals going regularly to the movies (at least once a month) to 39 million. This has been the story for years now. However, the cinema audience seems to have been reversed in urban India – from 23 million regular theatre-goers last year NRS now estimates there are 25 million. As a proportion this means a marginal increase from 9.6% to 10.0%.

The Internet as a medium seems to have paused on its growth trajectory. From 7.2 million users who logged in every week last year, the number has grown, though only to 9.4 million. As proportions, these represent 0.9% and 1.2% of India’s 12 years plus population. However, urban India has shown faster growth in internet reach – from 2.3% to 3.4%.

Mobile phones must now be given their due place as media. Reach of this medium – as measured by the proportion of the population accessing value-added-features (VAS) at least once a week – has grown from 1.1% last year to 2.7% -- translating to nearly 22 million individuals.

If there is one overall conclusion, it is that the press medium must watch emerging media closely. The NRS has the data points to indicate media consumption amongst consumers from all walks of life. It is also worth remembering that, socio-culturally speaking, India is like a couple of dozen countries with a total of sixteen official languages and wide disparities in living standards – the complexity of the Indian media market would rival those of Europe if taken as a whole.

NRS 2006 – DETAILED FINDINGS

Press adds 7 million readers over the last year.

Dailies continue to grow, adding 12.6 million readers from last year to reach 203.6 million while there has been a drop of 7.1 million magazine readers. It must be remembered that this refers only to mainstream magazines. A host of niche titles that continue to be launched regularly are not fielded and their collective readership estimate is outside the purview of the study.

Over the last 3 years the number of readers of dailies and magazines put together among those aged 12 years and above has grown from 216 mn to 222 mn – a growth of almost 3% over last year.

There is still significant scope for growth, as 359 million people who can read and understand any language do not read any publication. Of this 359 million, 68% read Hindi. It is not just affordability that is a constraint, since 20 million of these literate non-readers belong to the upscale SEC A and B segments.

The Hindi belt has been witness to intense activity from large dailies and is an indicator of the general growth in the vernacular dailies segment. To elaborate, vernacular dailies have grown from 191.0 million readers to 203.6 million while English dailies have stagnated at around 21 million.

Magazines overall show a decline in the reader base, both in urban and rural India. The reach of magazines has declined from 75 mn in 2005 to 68 mn in 2006. Magazines have lost 12% of their reach since 2005.

The battle heats up in English & Hindi Dailies arena

There are now two dailies that have captured more than 2 crore (20 million) readers – Dainik Jagran (with 21.2 million) and Dainik Bhaskar (with 21million). The gap between Dainik Jagran & Danik Bhaskar has reduced from 3.8 million readers to 200,000 readers this year.

The Times of India is the most read English Daily with 7.4 mn readers, but The Hindu has taken the second spot with 4.05 mn readers, pushing Hindustan Times, to the third spot with an estimated readership of 3.85 mn. Though Hindustan Times adding 360,000 new readers in Mumbai, it has but lost readership across the Hindi belt.

Press increases its share of urban media day

Today the average urban adult spends 44 minutes per day reading dailies and magazines. The average reading time used to be 41 minutes.

The growth in C&S penetration is more than the growth in TV owning homes

Television now reaches 112 mn Indian homes reflecting a growth of 3.2% over last year.

Homes with access to C&S have increased by 12% from 61 mn to 68 mn.

C&S reach has now penetrated 61% of all TV homes up from 56% last year.

TV & C&S dominate in Southern States

Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh dominate the markets with TV reach of 76.2%, 76.2% and 78% respectively. These States also have high penetration of Cable & Satellite i.e. 60%, 53% and 59% respectively.

Color TV now matches the rapid pace of cable and satellite growth

Homes with color TV have increased from 58 mn to 64 mn in 2006. The increment of 10.4% runs parallel to the growth in C&S.

Internet reach now exceeds 12 mn

The number of individuals who accessed the Internet in the last 3 months increased marginally from 10.8 mn to 13.0 mn in 2006. While 10.8 mn of these are in urban India, nearly 1.8 mn internet users reside in rural India. The growth seems slower than expected – it must be pointed out that the growth of the number of internet users in urban India is 35% over last year while in rural India this seems to have stagnated.

Cybercafé is the new access point for Internet

As reach of Internet increases, office is no longer the main place of access. As many as 34% of users now surf from cybercafé and 30% from home. About 20% of Internet users access it from the work-place.

Mobile phones: now the focus is on usage of advanced features.

Among the fast growing tribe of mobile phone owners, 38% access value added features like downloads, accessing news and Cricket scores, SMS etc vs. 13.9% last year. The figure is higher at 44% in 42 metros. This means that as an advertising medium, it reaches more than 22 million consumers. As can be expected, the usage levels are much higher among young urban audiences and needs to be closely watched by not only the press but also the TV industry in future. With the impending launch of 3G next year the quality of content that will be delivered to mobile subscribers will make it a force to reckon with.

Topics Of Interest

Reader engagement is a growing concern for many media owners. With this in mind, the NRS has – for the first time in India – attempted to capture the topics that interest readers across different strata of society. Apart from News and Politics, Sports is the topic of interest among readers. This is followed by Films & TV Serials. While the level of interest among urban audiences is predictably higher than among rural audiences, it is remarkable that urban and rural up-market readers (SEC AB and R1) exhibit very similar patterns.

Rise in TV viewers, FM radio listeners

Indian language dailies have grown substantially

MUMBAI: More people are reading daily newspapers and fewer are reading magazines. Television viewing has increased as have listeners for FM radio but the growth in the usage of Internet has been slower than anticipated. These are some of the findings of the National Readership Study (NRS 2006), the largest survey of its kind in the world.

The study has a sample size of 284,373 house-to-house interviews and covers 535 publications — 230 dailies and 305 magazines. It measures media exposure and consumer product penetration in urban and rural India.

According to NRS 2006, the readership of daily newspapers continues to grow. They have added 12.6 million readers since last year and reach 203.6 million people. Together with magazines, whose readership has declined, they now reach 222 million readers compared with 216 million readers last year.

NRS 2006 has compiled a list of 18 dailies that are part of the "Five Million Club", that is with a readership exceeding five million. Heading the list are Dainik Jagran (21.2 million) and Dainik Bhaskar (21 million). The gap in the readership figures of these two leading Hindi dailies has decreased this year from 380,000 last year to 200,000 readers this year. Of the 18 dailies in the "Five Million Club," six are in Hindi, three in Tamil, two each in Gujarati, Malayalam and Marathi and one each in Bengali, Telugu and English.

The only English daily with a readership of over five million is The Times of India (7.4 million). Its readership has declined from last year as has its position in the rankings from number 9 to number 11 out of 18. The Hindu has emerged second among English dailies with 4.05 million readers followed by Hindustan Times, which held second place last year. Despite its new edition in Mumbai with a readership of 360,000, Hindustan Times has slipped to number three (3.85 million).

The largest growth in readership has been seen in the Hindi belt. Indian language dailies as a whole have grown substantially in the last year from 191 million readers to 203.6 million readers. The readership of English dailies, on the other hand, has stagnated at around 21 million.

The reach of satellite television has exceeded that of the print media with 230 million individuals watching television, up from 207 million in 2005. NRS 2006 estimates that 112 million Indian homes are now reached by television. The number of homes with cable and satellite television has also grown from 61 million last year to 68 million this year. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh lead other States in terms of the reach of TV.

Internet usage grew from a low base of 7.2 million to 9.4 million, with the number of users who logged in every week growing by 30.5 per cent over the year. The number of individuals who accessed the Internet over the last three months was 12.6 million, a 16.7 per cent increase over last year.

Of the Internet users, 10.8 million are in cities while rural India has merely 1.8 million, indicating a stagnation. The study also found that more people are now accessing the Internet at cyber cafes (34 per cent) or at home (30 per cent) than at the workplace (20 per cent).

Radio's increased reach

One medium that has shown notable growth is radio, with its reach increasing from 23 per cent to 27 per cent of the population. FM radio has been the main reason for this growth, where the number of individuals listening in an average week has grown from 76 million to 119 million in 2006 — a 55 per cent increase.

While in the country as a whole, cinema viewership has declined from 51 million individuals who would go to the cinema at least once a month to 39 million, in urban India it has increased marginally from 23 million regular cinemagoers last year to 25 million this year.

NRS has recognised mobile phones as a part of media and finds that the proportion of the population accessing value-added services (VAS) at least once a week has grown from 1.1 per cent last year to 2.7 per cent this year, that is 22 million individuals.

NRS 2006 also looked at topics of interest for the first time. It found that apart from news and politics, readers were most interested in sports followed by films and television serials.

He explained the nitty gritty of working in media. Of course, none could beat Mr Padre's superb communication skills and sharp humour! In the afternoon, the Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC) played host to our students. Dr Buroshiva Dasgupta was our kind host - lending us the services of his eager staff to introduce their campus and studios. The students were lucky to meet Mr M.V. Kamath, the Chairman of Prasar Bharati. Though he is just 85 years young, his spirit competed with that of the 20 years' in the students group! The peak moment was when the students (and yours truly) were moved to tears by Mr Kamath, when she shared his experience of covering India's Independence at Red Fort, on August 14th night of 1947 ! A huge thanks to Manipal and its staff. A special thanks to Samvartha, who spent his entire afternoon to accompany the students! That was great. Photos: top right - Mr M.V. Workshop on Documentary Filmmaking

Department of Journalism was established in1992 at St. Aloysius College (accredited ‘A’ by NAAC), which itself has a reputation of serving the nation for the past 127 years. The Department is known for its innovative methods of teaching and activities. The ‘Film Making Competition’ (2005), two film festivals ‘Dark Projector’ (Sept. 2005) and ‘Shooting Stars’ (Feb. 2006) are only a few of such initiatives.

This year we are happy to introduce yet another new initiative: Workshop on Documentary Filmmaking. It is a seven-day intense workshop.

This being a WORKSHOP, it will be full of practical sessions on idea generation, scripting, camera, lighting, editing and sound. The workshop will culminate in public screening of the documentaries made by the participants. Mr. P. N. Ramachandra, an award winning filmmaker (from Bombay), of the first digital Tulu film Suddha, and teleserial Surabhi (Karnataka episodes) fame will be the main resource person.

Today, filmmaking using handycams has become a common practice, though most are not aware of how to make optimum use of the technology at hand. Besides, there is a dearth of expertise to guide interested people in teaching the art film making. Hence, we will focus on filmmaking using single CCD digital video cameras, since these cameras are readily and easily available in this era of digital technology. There will be sessions on using professional 3-CCD cameras too.

The workshop will be especially useful to the students in general and students and Mass Communication and Journalism, in particular. The members of the staff who handle film appreciation and media teaching will find this beneficial. 24 Aug. St Aloysius P U College has a new Principal! Mr John Edward D'Silva! In the context of Fr Swebert's leaving for America for a short break, Mr D'Silva has taken over the reign of the College. Mr D'Silva was the Dean of the College for many years. A wonderful teacher of mathematics, Mr D'Silva is respected for his teaching by one and all. As an administrator, Mr D'Silva has known to be uncompromising on quality and discipline. He has a clear vision of education, immense of concern for the education of the young and love for his wards. [Mr John Edward D'Silva, the Principal of St Aloysius Pre University College, has played an important role in building the reputation of the College] We hope, under Mr D'Silva's guidance, the SAPUC will grow from strength to strength. Congratulations to you Mr D'Silva, and all the best! Bon Voyage Fr Swebert, Come Back Refreshed After five years of vigorous work, Fr Swebert has got a deserved break. He has been temporarily relieved from the St Aloysius College Pre-University to take a mini sabbatical. Fr Swebert flew to United States of America on 17 August, to refresh himself in Psycho-spirituality. He will be doing some refresher courses in Berkely University. After a short stay there, he will go to Europe and then return home. [Fr Swebert's quest for excellence is seen in the allround growth the College, his meticulous planning and total dedication to the students and staff alike] Fr Swebert joined St Aloysius College in early 1990 teaching mathematics. He was also the in-charge College AICUF. Later, when PUC was bifurcated from the Degree College, Fr Swebert was appointed the first Principal of the SAPUC. Fr Swebert has toiled immensely to make this PUC what it is today - one of the most well-known PUColleges in the country. Thanks to his work and his dedicated staff - junior college has grown incredibly both in terms of numbers and quality. We wish him reinvigourating holidays, and await your safe return.

24 Aug. Death is a sign of hope, said Fr Eugene Lobo, the Principal and the main celebrant of the day, during the Mass to pray for the departed soul of Br Loy Fernandes. 23 Aug. Let Us Correct Some Errors While communicating the sad news regarding Br Loy's sad demise, I committed a few errors. The magnitude of the tragedy and hurry to reach out to hundreds of friends and admirers of Br Loy did not permit me check and recheck those errors, even if those errors are negligible. 1. In the first post, it was reported that Loy is from Cascia (after consulting a few!); no, Br Loy hails from Jeppur parish. 2. Timings of his death: the tragedy occured between 6.00-6.15 pm 3. Though three Brothers got into the sea, actually there were seven brothers who went to the sea shore, in Loy's batch. 4. Loy's body was found not 'away' from or 'near' Marina Beach, to be precise 'Harbour', that is naval base. 5. It was around 6 pm, on SAturday, when his body was found by two brothers. Now how did it happen: Br Loy and his six other companions had gone to the sea shore. On the way another batch of Brothers was returning from the sea shore; they warned this batch that they cannot swim, the sea is rough. Br Loy (or his group) seemed to have told that they wanted to go. (probably not as much to swim as to relax) To the best of our knowledge, Br Loy does not know swimming. Three Brothers, Loy included, got into the water. Others were along the beach. Two of those in the water, were in extremely shallow water, whereas Loy was slightly in deeper waters. Loy was standing facing the beach, and not swimming, since he does not know swimming. Just then a giant wave came and overpowered our Brothers. The other two, since they were closer to the shore than Loy was, escaped the force of the sea. Loy was taken defenceless, since he was facing the sea shore. Br Loy's mortal body had not bloated; no water entered his stomach. His eyes were wide open, expressing shock. It means, He died of shock, probably at the very first onslaught of the wave; he did not have to struggle in the water to save himself and in the bargain drink water. And surprisingly, his eyes were intact! No fish had attacked his eyes. May be his body was not in the deep water for too long. May have travelled to Harbour base, at the earliest in rather shallow water. When his body was found, it was very fresh. The eye witnesses say, they just could not believe it was a dead body. But once it was brought out of water, it changed it colour rapidly. It became dark. Paste had to be applied to his his eyes to close them. Harbour beach is roughly 40-45 minutes' drive; approximately 20 kilometers from Satya Nilayam (beach) where Loy was drowned. The Jesuits were searching for Loy all through Friday night and Saturday, along the beach. Since Harbour is a security zone, nobody was permitted to enter. Two brothers managed to coax the security to permit them to look for Loy's body. Br Jnanam, who found Loy's body, has a very frightening tale to tell - his agonising experience and struggle to take care of Loy's body - though it was in shallow (knee-deep) water, because of the force of the water, one he had to save himself holding the cement wall of Harbour leaving the body, the other minute cling to Loy's body, save himself, save Loy.... this was rather a long struggle, till somebody else came to Jnanam's help. May Loy's soul rest in peace. May he plead for us all.

Fr Francis Serrao, Rector of St Aloysius College was the main Celebrant. In his homily, Fr Stany D'Souza (Superior, Asha Kiran) highlighted the aspects of Loy's death - what it means, positively. Loy was a very naughty boy, a livewire. And sitting next to God, he would not be able to sit quietly. He would shove Jesus, and say, "see Jesus, this is my mother, this is my father, these are my brothers, ..." Hence, we need to be positive about death, and not be sullen, Fr D'Souza said. Frs Eugene Lobo, Denzil Lobo, Richie Rego, A S Rodrigues, Santosh Kamath, Denis Rasquinha, Francis Almeida were present. Rev. Fr Victor Machado, Rector of Seminary, along with many a Father from his community were also present. The church was packed to capacity, with the Jeppu parishenros, who missed a chance to pay their last respects to Br Loy in Chennai. The mass was followed by a prayer meeting in the Parish Hall. Mr Wilfy Rebimbus, noted singer and Loy's neighbour, paid rich tributes to Br Loy and his spirit. Fr Francis Almeida gave a brief discription of the events in Chennai - loss of livewire Loy and finding his lifeless body.

Loss of Committed Jesuit Mourned August 23, 2006: “When good men die, their goodness doesn’t perish.” said Mr. Charles Furtado, President of Sahodaya, the outreach programme of the St Aloysius College, during a condolence prayer meeting in memory of Bro.Loy Manohar Fernandes who passed away in a tragic accident on 18 August 2006. [Fr Eugene Lobo SJ, principal, spoke of Loy and his vigour, lively presence in the College] Mr Furtado remembered Loy as a faithful student and committed Jesuit. Loy was purposeful in his life and was gifted with a sense of humour. He was secular and good with everybody. He had a flair for story-telling and always had an active and enraptured audience. The Livewire Br. Loy Fernandes - A Personal Tribute

A Life Written in Smiles, Washed off by Waters 20 Aug 2006. God gave you His life, He took it away; blessed be His name forever. My association with Loy goes back to 1997, when I met him at Loyola, Mangalore. Loyola is study house for young boys, who aspire to be Jesuits in the future. During this phase they do their PUC (11-12th standard) or undergraduation, afterwhich they decide either to commit themselves to be Jesuits, or leave for what they hope to be greener pastures. [The effervescent Loy was a favourite with everyone - young and old, rich and the poor, boys and girls] Loy was a young little boy, full of beans. Anyone not knowing Loy well, might easily mistake him for over-enthusiasm, hyperactivity, or even looking for attention. But on second thought/ second encounter, s/he would realise how wrong one was to have views on Loy. Loy was born in Jeppu, Mangalore, on 19.10.1981. He is the first son of Mr Ligoury Fernandes and Mrs Margaret Fernandes. Two more brothers followed Loy: Lancy (a Jesuit scholastic, currently studying BSc - II in Dharwad) and his youngest brother. Loy was very fond of his brothers. During one of our meetings I fooled him about his attachment to his home, and he apologetically and mischievously said, "No Father; it is my brother's B'day. I want him to be happy. Besides, he is very close to me." At Loyola Mangalore, Loy decided he was sure what he wanted to be: a Jesuit preist, and nothing else. He proceded to Bangalore (1991, June) to Mount Saint Joseph. It is our Novitiate, where candidates are trained in intense spiritual practices - prayer, medidation, spiritual pursuit. They are also given a taste of other spiritualities like Yoga - anything that helps a person to be spiritually strong. [Who could miss that mischievous smile and sharp look in eyes? Loy liked being noticed; probably everyone had a photograph of/with Loy] At the end of two years, in 2001 June, Loy made his Perpetual Commitment (the First Vows for Jesuits). He declared he would live a poor life (POVERTY) detached from material goods (without having a claim on anything as his own), CHASTITY to live a chaste and pure life (to love and live for God and for others with an undivided commitment) and OBEDIENCE (to do the will of God, to sacrifice one's own free will in favour of God & common good). He was a Jesuit. From Bangalore, he moved to Trivandrum to do his Juniorate. It is a one year programme, where a jesuit learns to study, to get in touch with the variety of Indian cultures and arts, tries to master skills like public speaking, group discussions, psycho-social relationships, and a lot more things. After Juniorate, Loy wanted to do journalism. He told me that he wanted to be a journalist, and he wanted me to help him. Obviously St Aloysius (SAC) was the best destination, in the given situation and Jesuit context. I was a lecturer at SAC, but had just moved to Pune for two years (2002-04) to pursue my doctoral studies. And Loy came to SAC, residing at Asha Kiran at Kaprigudda, Jesuit study house for brothers doing undergraduate studies. In 2004 June I was back at Dept of Journalism, SAC. Loy was the very first student who met me. Welcomed me with his typical warm smile. "Welcome Father, all are waiting for you!" I fooled Loy for that exaggeration. But that was his mischievous style, accompanied by broad smile and a twinkle in his eyes! On my first visit to Loy's class, I picked up on Loy; he was being extra chirpy. Full of life; wanted to keep talking or doing something or the other all the time. Else, he felt restless. "Loy seems to very famous in the class!" said I, meaning, he was communicating too much with his friends during the class! Everybody had a hearty laughter. But there was no malice. [During his undergraduation days, Loy played a major role in the success of Karnataka Open School, which was conducted by the Asha Kiran Brothers on Sundays. Here, Loy is seen with his Open School teammates] I knew that the batch had immense potential. I started demanding from the students. First thing on my demand list was my typical SEMINAR. If any student failed to submit in time, s/he would be punished. After the class Loy told me how difficult and yet useful the seminar would be. Then came DHWANI, students' practice journal. A real challenge to any student. And you know, who took up the leadership to get the class together and publish it? Our own Br Loy with his friend Br Anil D'Sa (SDB). The student-duo did not get the necessary support from all their classmates, specially when the material was to be edited. But Loy and Anil struggled hard; very hard. Just two of them. In spite of their religious restrictions, they stayed back late evenings and got the magazine published. This was the ONLY time in the College that Dhwani was published in July! Never before, never after! The two student editors also managed to get the maximum advertisements with the help of their classmates, so much so, the front and back cover of the magazine was done on art paper! Many old students exclamied, "how did you manage to get THIS KIND OF MONEY?" Loy was a go-getter. I wanted my students to learn video camera work. Hence, I threw a challenge before each of Loy's classmates (final years): make a short documentary on any of the (19) units of SAC, such as Aloysian Boys' Home (ABH), Ladies Hostel, Middle School, etc. We had already acquired two handycams and an editing machine (computer). The occasion was right: Post Centenary Silver Jubilee (125 years) celebration of SAC. Nobody came forward. I repeated my challenge after a few weeks. No takers. Repeated. No takers. And after a couple of days one student comes forward: Loy. He told me, "Father, I want to do a documentary on ABH. Could you help me?" He had taken with him Keshava, his classmate from Kannada background, who always kept a very low profile. Loy wanted everybody - he knew no discriminations; favouritism was not his way. In making the documentary, Loy conducted quite a bit of research; he met many people regarding ABH. He wrote the script. Brought it to me for corrections. Rewrote. Took Arron Menezes (then First Year Journalism) with him to assist in camera work. This was how Arron was first initiated to camera; and today, Arron is a fine camera man! Arron feels Loy's absence, bitterly. Loy and I started editing the footage. It was all grainy: Loy had too many etreme-long-shots. I was not happy, hence, pointed it out. "Would you like to go ahead with this?" Loy was not sure. He said 'yes.' "You can, if you want to," I told him. The problem for you would be to reshoot the entire sequence, specially involving the persons whom you have interviewed! It would be embarrassing. On the other hand, even if you want to continue with the same footage, problem will be you won't be able to show it anyone because of its low quality. Think over it." In spite of feeling bad, he met Sr Albert of ABH and reshot her interview! This time he had better footage. But there was some problem, specially in the shots on the sea shore, where he read out a poem on SAC, the rallying point of the documentary. By then it was revision holidays in March; the College was siezed with exam fever. I had to lock the studio, and move to Pune. But Loy kept pestering me even during my Pune sojourn. I promised him that I would be back in May, and we could edit the footage. I returned. We had one day to work on and then proceed to Chennai for philosophy en route Bangalore. We tried to work. He had done some more work. But I was not satisfied with the quality of the footage. Loy's project remained half-done! Only his spirit remained behind that unfinished work. Well, his spirit has remained in the Department, in fact in the College. After his graduation, he wanted to go to Pune for philosophy, since some Jesuits think Chennai is not a good place, and Pune is better! He spoke to me. Since I had done my philosophy in Chennai, I know the place and its merits quite well. I encouraged him. When he went to Chennai, he was happy. He said that it so many times, in his mails. One of Loy's characteristics was regular communication; from Chennai, it was email forwards - to hundreds of them. I do not know if Loy got so much of time to read all those forwards he sent! He would send so many forwards, that many of his classmates and friends got irritated! Some of them asked him to 'write' mails; a few gave their mobile numbers to be called! And Loy did call them. Just an hour before that fateful swim in the sea on 18th, he called some of his classmates in Mangalore, and one of my currently final year students in Mangalore - the final calls - thanks to her for sending her mobile number. Between 14 August and 18, Loy had his internal examinations. Soon after his exams, he was on a mail-sending and phoning spree; he had to restrict all these things during the examinations week, though not stop. In the context of his unfortunate demise, I have been getting hundreds of mails and phonecalls to tell me how they recieved those forwards from him, how he called him/ her on 18th evening, etc! Loy had no dearth of friends. Everybody had seen in him a loving friend, an understanding brother or reliable companion. I had foreseen a great future in media for Loy. When I wanted some students to write on college issues to newspapers, Loy was the only one who volunteered to write. And he wrote almost every week to Deccan Herald. He wrote well. When an article of his published, he excitedly called me up and said, "Father, you kow, today two (sometimes three!) of my write-ups are published! Please read them, and tell me how they are." On 19th Aug, Sr Albert recalled how Loy had done three features on ABH for Deccan Herald, how he had done some video work, etc. Kids and sisters at ABH remember that, too well. I wanted Loy to be a Media man in the Karnataka Jesuit province. Loy had his eyes set on Nagaland Jesuit region. He loved adventures, he loved pioneering work. I had requested to the Karnataka Jesuit Provincial against sending Loy outside Karnataka, for I wanted him in Karnataka! When I spoke to Loy on that, and told him how many dreams I have for him in Karnataka Jesuit media scenario, how much I want him to be with me, to work with me as a Jesuit companion, he said he would think and tell me. He may have thought of; but he never told me; he would never tell me, either. All that I know and hope for is that I will miss his physical presence. I know his spirit is with me. Probably, when I follow him someday, we will be together. But Loy, I miss you. So do hundreds of your friends, classmates, juniors... Can you read those emails coming to my email box and your own email box to tell how they miss you? how they are shocked? how wonderful you had been to them? Even those strangers, who met you just for a fleeting moment? Loy was a bundle of talents: of head and heart, of creativity and spontaneity. He was a voracious reader, prolific writer, both during his Journalism days and philosophy days at Chennai, where he worked for a local English daily Adyar Times. He wanted me to network with this paper; he said so in so many words. No one can beat Loy's oratorial skills and sociability, much less his indomitable spirit. In every music/ singing group, Loy was a must. With all this, how did he manage to secure a distinction in every exam, every year? God alone knows! Probably, he was God's favourite too. Loy, you were too good; enviably good; probably, God did not want to miss you for too long. Just like us, human beings, God also wanted your company. But never forget us, your family and your friends, and above all your Jesuit family. We miss you. Rest in Peace, plead for us. Our Worst Fears Come True - Br Loy Found Lifeless

8.10 pm. Our worst fears have come true. Br Loy Fernandes is no more. His dead body was recovered today at around 7.45 pm, near Marina Beach, Chennai. According to the news we have, the poilce have gone to get the body. It is also identified as that of Loy. The body of Loy was found near Marina Beach at around 7.45 pm. Marina beach is about 30 minutes' drive from 'Satya Nilayam Beach' where Br Loy was drowned. It could be recalled that Br Loy had gone to swim to the sea shore, behind Satya Nilayam (Thiruvanmiyur, Adyar). The beach is 15-20 minutes' walking distance. It was reported that he was drowned at around 6.00 pm, and his body was not found. The Jesuits at Satya Nilayam, where Loy has been studying philosophy for the last year and a half, had been searching. Finally their search came to a tragic end with finding the mortal remains of Br Loy. It has been decided to have his funeral in Chennai, itself. The funeral ceremony will begin with a Holy Mass at Satya Nilayam, at 2.30 pm, followed by funeral rites at Loyola College, Chennai. Rev Fr Vijay Prabhu (Provincial of the Karnataka Jesuits), his secretary and a few other Jesuits are on their way to Chennai to pay the last respect to the departed Brother. May his sould rest in peace. May God give the bereaved family and the Jesuit family consolation and peace.

19 Aug. 3.55 pm. We have been constantly in touch with Chennai. Loy's parents have left for Chennai. According to the recent phone call (2.30 pm) the search for Br Loy has yielded no results. Messages regarding Loy have been pouring in expressing shock, grief, anxiety, hope - for their beloved friend Loy, who made a big difference in their lives; who made those short meetings sweet, who offered those warm memorable smiles... We pray that God take care of Loy; may everything be fine with Loy. I will keep you updated.

In Search of Br Loy

19 Aug. 3.30 pm. We have no good news to give you. According to the latest news we have (at around 12 pm) the search is on in Chennai, and we have not traced Loy. His parents have left for Chennai. Keep him in your prayer. 19 Aug, 8.00 am. So far no more news about Loy. We have not recovered his body yet. An email from Chennai informs us that three brothers had gone to the sea shore. It was high tide. Sea is rough at this time. The three brothers got into the sea. They were caught in the tide. The other two managed to escape. It found Loy to be too good to resist, as many of us have found him. And Loy was taken away. That was 6.00 Pm on 18 August. Though the police were there on the sea shore, and the two brothers pleaded for their help, it was of no avail. One of them came running to the Jesuit house to tell the Fathers (the sea is very close -about 15 -20 minutes by walk). All the Jesuits and some fishermen tried their best, but to no avail. We Jesuits at SAC, visited the family in Mangalore, this morning. The parents have taken it well. They are sad, they are missing him. They are very spiritual; but no unnecesary hallo-ballo. They are extremely edifying. Loy's Jesuit brother from Dharwad, is expected this morning. This afternoon, the parents are leaving for Chennai. Let us pray for our beloved Loy and his family. Shocking News - Tragic Death of Br Loy

18 Aug. 7.00 pm. We have just received the shocking news that Br Loy M Fernandes SJ is missing. The Jesuit Brother, had gone swimming to the sea side, and reportedly drowned. Br Loy Fernandes studied at St Aloysius College between 2002-2005. He had taken Journalism, English optional and Communicative English. Being very active in all the College activities, he won many a heart and prize too. He passed out of the College with distinction in 2005. Br Loy joined the Society of Jesus in 1999, Mount Saint Joseph, Bangalore. After two years of his Novitiate (spiritual training) he went to Trivandrum for Juniorate for year, and then came to Asha Kiran (residence) to do his B.A. journalism at St Aloysius College. During his studies, he also published many an article in local and national dailies. Even during his philosophical studies, he was working with " - Adyar Times" a local English daily in Chennai. After his undergraduation in 2005, he went to Chennai (Satya Nilayam) to do his post graduation in Philosophy from Loyola College, under Chennai university. Early this week he mailed many of us asking for prayers, for he said that he was writing his internal examinations of the III Semester. Probably, today he had completed his exams, and had gone swimming. His body is not yet recovered. Br Loy hailed from Mangalore. His younger brother is a Jesuit brother, too. He is doing his 2nd year of BSc in Dharwad. He has one more younger brother who is doing his studies, staying with his parents in Cascia, Mangalore.

Asha Kiran is a new Jesuit House in Mangalore. The house is located behind Fr Muler's hospital; just adjacent to Pumpwell circle along Ullal road. Asha Kiran means Ray of Holy Desire - rightly so, a place which nurtures young college-going Jesuit Scholastics' desire to be good priests. [Asha Kiran - Sylveliz Kripa - new abode] Presently there are 29 Jesuit inmates - Fr Stany D'Souza (superior, who is also doing his PhD in Kannada literature), Fr Melvin D'Cunha (Asst, & a PhD scholar in BioTechnology) and Br Joseph Alvares, an 80 year old Jesuit brother (Brohter of Late Mr Jo.Sa. Alvares - noted Konkani novelist and journalist). There are 26 young Jesuit Scholastics (Brothers) who are pursuing their undergraduate studies at St Aloysius College in various disciplines. [Mr Eddie D'Sa and Mrs Mevis D'Sa are the donors of the plot on which the new Jesuit residence is standing. Fr Vijay Prabhu felicitated them with a shawl and gifts, and expressed the deep gratitude of the Karnataka Jesuits] In fact it was there for the last five years. But in a different place (Kaprigudda, Falnir), in a rented house. This year, in June, the Jesuit residence was moved to the newly constructed place, on a plot donated by Mr Eddie D'Sa and family in memory of their parents. Thirty Three Years of Meritorius Service 05 Aug. A glorious saga of 33 years came to an end. Actually it did on 31 July. But human beings tried to postpone it. Ultimately, time had it last laugh. Ignatius Brings Jesuits Together

31 July. Wonder what Jesuits do when not teaching in College or taking care of institutions, social works, and the like? Well, they take time out! That is exactly what they did at SAC on the feast of their Founder St Ignatius Loyola. After a hectic day of celebrations with their Staff,Students and friends during the day, all the Jesuits of SAC, Loyola House (Candidates aspiring to be Jesuits), Asha Kiran (Brothers in Formation who are doing their Undergraduation), Fatima Retreat House (Senior Jesuits involved in Retreat and Counselling work), and Kalmady (new Jesuit Parish near Udupi) came together to celebrate the feast. They began the day with an inspiring talk by Fr Stany D'Souza. He spoke on the Mind of St Ignatius Loyola. Is St Ignatius relevant today? or How does St Ignatius make US relevant today? that is the question. The talk was philosophical and thought provoking. The Jesuits joined their hearts together in prayer and then, should we say, in a sumptuous dinner! Deo Gratias!

The Final Year Journalism students are working day in and day out to publish their bilingual practice journal dhwani. Dhwani means 'voice' or evocation. It is published biannually. Completely conceived and produced and published by our students. Just imagine students who study three optional subjects with two mandatory languages at BA level bringing out this professionally done, published and circulated journal on their own! And for this, they sweat it out - day in and day out - literally! Will you expect a student to stay back till 10.30 PM in the College Staff room to work on this project? Will you expect a whole group of students to spend their entire Saturday and Sunday to spend in the staff room just to work on their journal? Well, there is one thing that can describe this madness: they love their subject, they love their teacher, they love their work! Here is wishing them the very best...

Rego's media page was launched in the final week of October 2005, as all-the-time-available communication forum between Fr Richard Rego and his Journalism students. Now after eight months, the blog has recorded 3000 hits (3000th hit coming on 20 July 2006)! For a student community which is not as much connected to the net as the student population in Bangalore or Mumbai, this is a massive achievement. What is more! the blog is popular not only among his students; you can find quite a few visitors to his blog from USA, Canada, Singapore, Mexico, Hong Kong, Germany, England, Australia, Japan, and a host of other countries! Two of the days when the blogs regeistered very high hits were when the Karnataka SSLC board (10th standard) announced its annual examination results in early May; the blog constantly kept the students and associates of SAC informed of the developments. On the day the results were announced there were 75-76 hits to the blog. When the Pre-University Education Board (PUC or 12th Standard) announced, the blog was the first one to disseminate news besides publishing curtain-raisers. On the 'dooms-day' the log received 89 hits to it. The Degree (graduation) results day expereinced around 65 hits and the day when University Grants Commission sanctioned a Major Research Project to Fr Richard Rego SJ and Ms Suman Priya Mendonca (for the first time in the history of SAC), the blog received 69 hits! One of the funniest moments for the blog-master was to note that someone from USA had come to this blog looking for "sardarji jokes"! That happened because someone asked google.com for 'sardarji jokes', and this which which had carried a film review, mentioning about 'recycled sardarji jokes' in malamaal weekly, was listed as a site and was directed to by google.com! Many associations have been busy with their inauguration. NCC (all the three wings) have begun their excercises. Incidentally, SAC is the only College which has all the three wings of NCC in one college! The Journalism students have been associated with a number of activities: probably busiest time of their student life! Final years have just completed their seminars and book reviews. They are busy with video editing, Dhwani (bilingual journal), Al-madhyam activities, seminar presentations, learning DTP, etc. Most of them have just finished a three-day bridge course for the freshers to the College. In addition, they are members of many more associations. Their hands are overfull and more! That is the best thing to happen to a student at any time of their life in any college... The second year students are busy learning reporting for the web, TV, learning photography, visiting the press club and reporting from there, etc. In the meantime, some of them have just completed sending invitations to many colleges all over India. They are a quick-learning lot. The first years are fast learning that being a student at SAC is a special thing - it means fun and education! Just imagine, in the very beginning they are doing Al-News (picking up headlines from newspapers and displaing them on the notice board for the entire college to read) and Al-Week designing the wall bulletin of the Campus news. They use pagemaker to design it typically in the newspaper style.

2 July. I am back from Bangalore after attending a meeting. I come back with some good news for the department: good news about the generosity of Fr Principal to the Department and its tiny studio. We have a 7.1 MP digital camera, with a 256 MB xd memory card. Plus we have two sunguns, an extra filament, a tripod, a background screen for TV shootings, etc. Some more things are to come. Doesn't our Principal deserve a very big "Thank you"? Sure, he does. Then why don't you express it? I would like to meet the Dhwani team tomorrow. Plus, the first year students regarding their Al-news and Al-week. The Second years need to know their groups for Ripples. Have a great time.

One more significant event has been well conducted by the students. That augurs well for such a vibrant student body at the Dept of Journalism. 1 July 2006 Saturday: Kannada Press Day. Celebration at SAC Xavier Block Hall at 5.00 pm. Mr Sugata Shrinivas Raju, Outlook, will be the chief guest ("Globalisation and Small Newspaper"). Prof. S Havanoor will be the Guest of Honour and Rev. Fr Eugene Lobo (Principal) will be President. This is brought to you by Dept of Journalism in Collaboration with Abhinava quarterly. * Now the seminar-submission day is fast approaching; hardly a few hours! On the heals of seminar, final years have their Dhwani magazine to work on. I would like to have their plans and sketch for the forthcoming issue. Meeting with the Dhwani group will be on Thursday (29) afternoon. The First Years have already been introduced to Al News and Al Week. Their work begins now - scouting for news and presenting it to the Campus. They will also look after the Journalism Notice Board. The Second Year students have to plan their activities along the reporting lines. And please remind Madam about Ripples.

Memorable Day SAC

It was a day full of activities at SAC. You will read brief details at www.sacjournalism.blogspot.com. Four of our students were eager to attend the programme at Aloysian Boys' Home, Ullal, and record their performance. One could not due to health; the other three were so enthusiastic that they caught everyone else' attention with their zeal, agility and love for the (J) Department! When they returned it was 9.00 pm. Bravo! The Al-TV news will commence from Tuesday. For some unavoidable reason, we were not able to edit it today. The students team had come with great enthusiasm; they shot the anchor part, and also captured it. We hope to edit it tomorrow. And then on, Al-TV will be there, daily, for you.

Staff Seminar

It was a non-working day for students. But for the staff, it was a hectic day! The staff had a meeting (yours truly was in the Heads of the Department meeting); when he emerged out of the meeting, a severe headache accompanied him! It was all about IQAC, university sponsored certificate courses and impending autonomy. Lots of demands from the teachers. Lots of meetings; lots of activities. Well, anything for my College!
